What changes in the UK on 1 January 2027
Two of the biggest changes to unfair dismissal law in decades start on the same day:
- The qualifying period drops from two years to six months. Most employees will be able to bring an ordinary unfair dismissal claim once they have six months' continuous service.
- The cap on the compensatory award is removed. Both the fixed cap and the 52 weeks' pay limit go for dismissals where the employment ends on or after 1 January 2027.
Dismissals close to the changeover are tricky, because unpaid statutory notice can push the date used for counting service into 2027. The calculators above handle that for you.
How these calculators work
Each calculator applies the rules in the Employment Rights Act 1996, as amended, and the current annual limits. We show the dates and figures used so you can check them, and link to the law behind each step. Figures were last checked on 13 October 2026.
